Welcome to LodgingGuide's hospitality industry listings for the Wichita area.
This south central Kansas town in America’s heartland, established where the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers flow together, with its roots in the great Western migration, got its name from the Wichita Indians who first resided here. Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, and supports Wichita State University, the first public land-grant university west of the Mississippi River, begun as Fairmount College in 1895. William Lear, designer of the Lear Jet, was born here; Amelia Earhart grew up and began flying not far from here; Clyde Cessna and Walter Beech formed their airline company, and in the 1920s Wichita began its career as a national center for aircraft testing and production. This is the land of Dorothy, Toto and cyclones with its dramatic weather and fields of sunflowers and wheat resembling a golden ocean, unobstructed in all directions on a completely flat landscape, punctuated only occasionally by oil rigs and grain elevators. Wichita offers residents and visitors alike the rich array of cultural and dining alternatives found in all major cities, yet is surrounded by the simple, natural beauty of the American plains that has persisted from the time of its earliest native residents.
